How The Life Of A Fashion Stylist Actually Is
The majority of people, when they think of people making a living by being stylists in the fashion world, imagine glamour, glitz and freebies. Well, this is partly true. Since the glamour, glitz and freebies are just a part of the life of a person in this career; they also have to manage stress, anxiety and no sleep. Sure, their job can be fun (like everyone else's) but it can also be exhausting and at times frustrating. So what kind of person is your average fashion stylist? They're the type of persons who get up at the crack of dawn, get all the chores together and then get to location ASAP. They usually have to be there, at the very least, two hours early so they have time to get everything set up and their talents prepared. Most stylists would say that the best thing about their jobs would have to be the freebies and the thing that you can meet many famous people. The downside would have to be the long hours they have to put in and of course the attitude that a lot of celebrities seem to have. Of course, being a stylist isn't just about how decent they are with their work, they should also have the credentials to back them up, which means, that they should have at least learned in a fashion school and have developed a network before trying it out in real life.
As to the job description for a fashion stylist, let's just say it's a little intimidating. For one thing, these persons are the ones who create the visual images you and just about everyone else sees in photos in magazines and in music videos and such. These are people who utilize design briefs and work with different groups of individuals in the form of photographers, designers, art directors, set builders and light technicians. Their typical work activities usually include being in contact with public relation companies, retailers and manufacturers; being the one to find the best item to be used for a shoot; borrowing, purchasing or renting clothes and props; getting said products to location or to the studio and making sure they work best with their intended use; being the ones to dress people, especially the models on shoot; making sure to build up a network of contacts and; being ready for whatever fashion emergency may come their way. These people are usually employed by advertising agencies, magazines, media design companies, music production organizations, newspapers, retail organizations and publishers.
So you can see, being a fashion stylist is not all easy task where you get to play dress up on your favorite celebrity or model. Being in this line of work requires a certain kind of professionalism which not many can handle. This job also mean not just being innovative but also being street savvy and knowing how to get along with people of big egos. Being in this line of work is not easy and isn't for the faint hearted.
